Andy Lippincott

From Outcyclopedia, the free and queer encyclopedia.

Andy Lippincott was a fictional character in the American Doonesbury comic strip created and written by Gary Trudeau. Andy, a young law student, was the first gay character to appear in a nationally syndicated comic strip, making his first appearance in February of 1976, and coming out to classmate Joanie Caucus in 1977. Eventually passing the bar and becoming a lawyer, Andy provided a face and a voice for gays during his time in the strip.

In 1989 Andy was hospitalized with complications of AIDS. Maintaining high spirits and a sense of humor through the ordeal, Andy even videotaped himself so as to provide the entertainment for his memorial service. In an expression of defiance, he stated he had no intention of passing on before the Beach Boys' album, Pet Sounds, was released on CD. Bedridden, Andy finally realized his ambition, dying peacefully as the CD played, in the 24 May, 1990 installment. His last words were, "Brian Wilson is God." Andy Lippincott's battle with and death from AIDS is considered by many to be a milestone not only in the history of the Doonesbury comic strip but also in that of the comics genre in general.
