Agathon (445-400 BCE)

Athenian tragic poet and playwright, noted as perhaps the first Greek dramatist to create his own original characters, rather than deriving them from established myths, and also of using the traditional chorus as a source of musical interlude rather than commentary. Plato uses him as a character in his Symposium, while Aristotle writes of his innovations in Poetics. Sadly, only fragments of his writings survive today. Links:
