A Queen of the Amazons,
Antiope was the sister of Hippolyta
and
Penthesilea.
According to some myths, she was carried away by Hercules
to Athens to be the bride of Theseus, or Theseus himself carried her away. In others, Hippolyta
is kidnapped by Hercules, and Antiope and Penthesilea lead the army of
Amazons that attacks Athens in an attempt to rescue their sister.
In the Wonder
Woman comic books, Antiope is the leader of a breakaway group of Amazons
who disapprove of the more tolerant attitude Hippolyta and her daughter
Diana (Wonder Woman) have towards the patriarchal societies of the outside
world. Her daughter, Artemis,
shares Antiope's feelings about men, but agrees to become the new Wonder
Woman after Diana is killed.
