Colin Clive
Film actor Colin Clive was born Colin Clive-Greig in St. Malo, France in 1900, the son of a British colonel. Best known for his role as Dr. Henry Frankenstein in James Whale's Frankenstein (1931) and its sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein, (1935), Clive first met Whale while working with him in the London stage presentation of Journey's End, and was cast by Whale in the film version in 1930. He also appeared in Jane Eyre (1934); Mad Love (1935); and The Widow from Monte Carlo (1935), among others. Married to film actress Jeanne De Casalis, Clive was bisexual and a member of Whale's circle of gay Hollywood friends. Unfortunately, he was also an alcoholic who suffered from tuberculosis. These two factors contributed to his death from pneumonia in 1937, ending a brief but impressive acting career. External links: Internet Movie Database - Colin Clive Entry revised 12 October, 2004.
