Fierce Ruling Diva is a Dutch house party music group, also known as FRD, formed by
DJs Flamman
and Abraxas
in 1989. Fierce Ruling Diva first performed at the illegal Planet
E club in Amsterdam, and soon began touring Europe, eventually performing
at large-scale rave parties at clubs in England and Scotland. In
1990, after the closing of Planet E, FRD began performing at Subtopia,
a club located on an abandoned barge also known as "Das Boot." They
also produced the music score for the rave film, "Naar De Klote!" ("Waisted"),
and for an advertising campaign for the Mobil Oil Corporation, titled "Power
Drive." FRD quit performing in 1994 when Abraxas, burnt out, left
for New York to open and run a music store. Though he returned in 1995
and the group resumed producing records, FRD did not perform onstage again
until the Subtopia festival in 1999, held to celebrate FRD's tenth anniversary.
In 2000, Abraxas again left, this time to pursue a business degree at the
University of Edinburgh. He returned in 2001, and Fierce Ruling Diva
currently has plans to resume recording and performing. FRD's albums
include I Don't Wanna Be a Freak; Keep Moving in Time; Whipped Kream;
Rubb It In and Atomic Slide.
