Gregory Adams

Gregory Adams is an African-American gay writer and activist whose work especially concerns the rights of GLBT people of color.  He served as Media Director for the 1993 March on Washington and was the founder and director of the Bayard Rustin Alliance, a group for GLBT persons of color organized to work for gay rights and also to address racism both within and without the gay community.

In 1995 Adams participated in the Million Man March on Washington organized by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a matter of some controversy considering the anti-gay statements Farrakhan has made in his speeches and essays.  Adams noted that whatever Farrakhan and other straight black men may think of homosexuality, both straight and gay men of color "face the same racism."  He also noted that the objections he heard to his participating in the march all came from white gays who, however well-meaning their intentions may have been, showed their own latent racism by presuming that black persons within the community needed to be guided as to which leaders, events, and causes they should or should not support.

Gregory Adams continues to work for greater social and political freedom and equity for people of color and GLBT persons of all ethnicities. He resides in the Washington, DC area and is a contributing editor for Angles, the journal for the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies.
