Scott Cunningham (1956 - 1993)
Wiccan priest and author, born 27 June. Beginning in the 1980s, Cunningham began writing several books about the Neopagan religion of Wicca, usually centered around the practice of spells and rituals, though also dealing with practicing Wicca as a lifestyle as well as a religion. His works contributed greatly to the spread of the religion, giving practical advice in very simple, easy to understand terms.
While some in the Wiccan community have criticized his work as promoting a "Disneyfied" and too eclectic version of their craft, most have praised him for his popular approach. His works include The Truth About Witchcraft Today; Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner; Living Wicca; Earth Power!; Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magickal Herbs; The Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews; and The Magical Household.
Cunningham died from AIDS complications in 1993. A biography of his life and work, Whispers of the Moon, was published in 1996.
