Wu Tsao (c.1800 - ?)
Although she is considered one of the truly great woman poets of China, very little is known in the West about the life of Wu Tsao. Her father was a merchant, her husband was a merchant, and the disappointing relationships she had with both men were factors in her pursuit of relations with women. That she was a lesbian is without doubt, as evidenced by her many erotic poems of love for women, the most well-known being For the Courtesan Ch'ing Lin. She wrote poetry on many other subjects as well, becoming highly popular in her day, with her poems sung throughout China. Eventually, she spent her final years living in seclusion as a Taoist nun. That so little is known about her is a great pity, for her poetry shows a soul and passion few others have achieved. To know more about what fueled that passion would be as inspiring and soul-stirring as her poems are.
